One of the aims of the Southern Counties Chess Union (SCCU) is "to conduct one or more Individual Championship competitions open to players qualified to represent Member Counties or Non-County Members in SCCU competitions". In recent years the SCCU has awarded the right to award the title "Southern Counties Champion" to different congresses and this year it was awarded to the Surrey Congress.
To be eligible to be awarded the title Southern Counties Champion a player must qualify to play for either a Member County (currently Buckinghamshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent, Middlesex, Surrey or Sussex) or a Non-County Member (currently Richmond Juniors or Hampshire Juniors as the other Non-County Members (the Hastings and Thanet Congresses) do not field chess teams).
